How Bed Sores Develop

People who are confined to a bed are at high risk of developing bed sores. That is why they must be repositioned every two hours. Bed sores also develop in people who are wheelchair bound.

The constant force on a person's shoulder blades, buttocks, heels, hips and other pressure points reduces blood circulation. Without adequate blood flow, the skin breaks down and dies.

Also called pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, bed sores are prone to infections, which can quickly become lethal.

When nursing homes follow proper standards of care, their residents rarely if every develop bed sores. Yet, long-term care facilities are frequently understaffed. Residents pay the price for this negligence — sometimes with their lives.

If someone you love developed a serious bed sore while in a nursing home, assisted living facility or hospital, please contact attorney Kevin Garrison.
